Level Design

Ever since I've played my first horror game, Dead Space 2, I've had a thing for level design. Because the scary monsters and dark lighting weren't the only things that scared me, there was also the twisting and turning, never being able to see what comes next. I've created different abstracts during my time here, each fitting a specific theme and mood. Have a look!

Level Design: Welcome

Right on top, you would've seen a short clip of my 2D Obstacle Course.

Right Below, you will see the full track, before and after planning and implementation.

Having designed so many levels, I now know how to create levels based on where they are situated, ensuring that mechanics are not introduced all at once and that players are allowed to learn about them before moving on to the next one.

Level Abstract(Horror Theme)

Below, you will find one of the level abstracts I've created for a horror game.

I've learnt that levels, depending on their purpose, need to have a certain rhythm for the mood to truly come out. For example, horror games like to continuously jump at the player, yet hold back at certain intervals to maintain a certain anxiety.

PaperMap & Level Look (Tutorial Level)

This is another level abstract which I created. It has been built and can be seen via the screenshots I have provided.

Tutorial levels, on the other hand, need to be smooth and easy. Thus their layout should be straight, and pose only one challenge at a time to help players get used to the game mechanics.

Multiplayer Level layout

I was part of a group which designed this level with the aim of maximizing fairness and options for players to choose from.

As previously stated, the key to a good multiplayer level is fairness. Both teams must have equal opportunities, so the map has to either be symmetrical, as shown below, or provide both sides with equal opportunities.
